It was in the 19th century that the machinery ancestors of the forklift was first developed. At this time, small, battery-powered models were invented for the purpose of moving traveler's luggage at the Altoona train station within Pennsylvania. During WWI, some different versions were made within England specially to be used in the material handling business. These machines evolved as a solution to the manpower shortage at that time.
The modern equivalents come in a range of configurations and sizes. There are the large truck-mounted forklift units that are also called sod loaders and then the opposite end of the spectrum has small hand truck models. There are also a line of automated versions known as forklift automated guided vehicles that are practically robotic in nature. These units were developed to improve production and as a means of lowering operational costs.
Attachments have been made to fit onto a lot of regular forklifts, giving them the capability of performing a wider selection of tasks. The motors can be internal combustion or IC units, working on gasoline, propane or diesel, or there are battery operated options which require regular charging. Standard warehouse models will usually be rated to raise between around 1 and 5 tons.
Fuel cost is the other main advantage of electric forklifts. These units have lower cost per hour compared to any of the other IC or internal combustion units. Amongst the main disadvantages to the electric forklifts is their higher initial expense. Brand new electric forklifts could range from 20 percent to 40% more compared to internal combustion units which are similarly rated.
Electric forklifts on the other hand, offer many benefits such as quiet operations, which can be a huge plus for indoor settings. Additionally, no requirement for fuel storage mean no room needs to be allotted for tanks of fuels that are dangerous and flammable. As electric forklifts have less components that move than IC models, and they are typically used in cleaner settings and indoors, they tend to have a longer overall lifespan.
The electric forklifts biggest disadvantage is the batteries downtime. The big and very heavy, lead acid batteries are somewhat like those\the ones now found in automobiles. These batteries are really strong and extremely big. Normally, batteries offer enough power for one regular 8-hour shift, and this translates into 5 or 6 hours of continuous use.
